<jats:p>Established during the Italian Renaissance, the term ‘design’ derives from the Italian disegno , meaning ‘drawing’, suggesting both the drawing of a line on paper and the drawing forth of an idea. Consequently, the drawing is familiarly understood as the prototype for building. However, in this text, I suggest that the term ‘prototype’ is applicable to all stages of the architectural process, from drawing to building to using, as well as evolving conceptions of the architect.</jats:p> |
