<jats:p> A consideration of some of the existing theoretical approaches for understanding surveillance in the workplace is provided with a particular emphasis on the qualitative changes in the nature of monitoring which occur when electronic means are utilized. The current state of Canadian legislation and union positions on electronic surveillance are presented briefly in order to draw attention to the need for further theoretical and practical attention to this issue. </jats:p>
