Biography of Kazimierz Dejmek (1924-2002) is an exemplary illustration of the post-war history of Poland, and a portrait of a certain generation of Poles. First, this generation erected the “edifice” of the Polish People’s Republic, and later the same people took active part in dismantling the system at the cost of betrayal their own youth ideals. The artistic biography of Dejmek is a story of the growing Polish theatre. He was the creator of the comprehensive conception of the National Theatre. He wanted the Theatre to develop a fixed repertoire, covering the whole range of Polish dramatic works. Consequently, he did a lot to ensure the highest standards of performance by a carefully selected team of actors. As a director, he staged a lot of performances, including Old-Polish drama. |
