News issued 170 years ago were, obviously, very different from the current ones. But it is worthwhile to work with them during lessons and to explore how comprehensible are they for the students and to what extent are students able to rewrite these old texts into modern ones, publishable today. We analysed 450 texts from 90 students, who were remaking the same five news: two domestic and three fo- reign ones, studying the comprehension (general sense and reality of that time), the language (lexis, syntax, grammar) and the journalistic news form. We found, that the understanding of the text is very low. Moreover, the old texts lured students to archaic lexis, syntax and grammar, as well as the journalistic met- hods, which are unacceptable in today’s journalism. This exercise seems to be very fruitful whilst teaching students the evolution of genres, origins of Slovak journalism and principles of processing news texts.
