The article characterises the cultural phenomenon of retromania, using it to attempt to explain why contemporary artists use styles from past decades, and often refer to the past in an effort to evoke and resurrect it. In the next section, a musical phenomenon, the phenomenon of hauntology is presented, thus providing insight into the greatest fears of the generation of artists growing up in Britain in the 1970s. In line with this, the author analyzes the following books: Simon Reynolds’ "Retromania: Pop Culture’s Addiction to Its Own Past" (2013) and "Ghosts of My Life", and Mark Fisher’s "Writings on Depression, Hauntology and Lost Futures" (2014). |
