Inhaltsangabe

The paper presents findings from field work conducted among refugees in Syracuse, NY. The emphasis is on how refugees from Somalia, DR Congo, Burma, and Bhutan adapt to the society and how Americans perceive newcomers. Refugees face difficulties adjusting to American way of life (education, economy, etc.) but the well-developed system of institutions (federal, state, and civic) has been able to help them adapt to the host society. Despite tensions related to converting a former Catholic church into a mosque, the prevailing attitude of citizens of Syracuse is tolerant toward refugees.
