In the Franco-Russo-Turkish-Austrian interplay of interests, the fate of the Romanian Principalities would be decided by strength of arms. The fall of the political-military and financial Ottoman power, as well as the near prospect of the Franco-Russian war determined the mitigation of Russian territorial claims, first from both Principalities, then from Moldavia to the Siret, and finally from Moldavia to the Dniester and Prut. The aggravation of the oriental issue, at the beginning of the 19th century, influenced the evolution of relations between the European powers, so after the dismantling of Poland there is no cabinet or statesman that does not have a division project of the Ottoman Empire being kept for the right moment.
