The article is an attempt to show fake news as a complex phenomenon in the media space, the dangers of which can not be underestimated. In the first part, author, recalling international research, tries to determine the essence of this phenomenon, as well as its global scale of occurrence and impact. The capper of the text is a presentation of a set of good practices that will help defend against disinformation in the media. In the second part author will try to locate fake news in the teaching of the Holy Church based on the analysis of the latest Message for the World Communications Day, which Pope Francis entitled "The truth will set you free" (Jn 8:32).
