<p>TO INSURE THAT MANUALS ARE USABLE, it is not enough to analyze the readers. Writers can use microcomputers to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the manuals text. In addition, microcomputers can help apply good layout and design principles, which can also contribute to a manuals usefulness. This paper explores these possibilities and concludes that microcomputers can indeed help make manuals usable.</p>
