As part of a larger research project on basic writers in the workforce after college, 21 former basic writers who held postgraduate jobs were interviewed in person. This article focuses on one of the research questions of the study: how do formerly weak writers manage to write adequately for their jobs? Through information given in the interviews, it was concluded that the rhetorical, psychological, and social environment of the workplace fostered better writing in basic writers than the academic environment had. This article recommends Writing Across the Curriculum as one means of duplicating the workplace-writing content in college writing classes.
|
