The current study uses the 2012 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS; N = 3,959) to investigate whether a patient-centered provider is more likely to discuss cancer surveillance options (PSA, mammograms, Pap tests) with patients and whether these types of conversations have any impact on having these tests performed. Results demonstrated that patient-centeredness was related to communication with patients about uncertainty with PSA testing. Additionally, discussion of patient choice was related to increased Pap testing, while discussion of uncertainty with PSA testing efficacy was related to increased PSA testing. Future research should strive to increase our understanding of antecedents to patient decision making. |
