After a brief review of existing literature on ethnicity as a possible predictor for media ownership and use, particularly new media, the article examines a school survey in which ‘ethnocultural position’ was tested alongside common sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, socioeconomic status and education, looking for correlation with home media access and with specific media applications and functions. To further examine the school survey results, in-depth interviews on media use and identity among ethnic minority youth are discussed, creating an integration-oriented, homeland-centred profile of media use in the context of four ‘types’ of identity (religious, ethnic, national and cultural) and various patterns of media consumption (time spent, genre preferences, etc.) among respondents. Finally, the most visible policy guidelines in current Dutch media and minority policy are described in this context.
