<jats:p>The article discusses the identity-crisis that has taken place in the institution of cinema during the last years. The changes (in aesthetics, economics and the sociological conditions) are related to both the Finnish institutional strategies adopted since the 1990s and to the prolific experimental film-makers Eija-Liisa Ahtila and Mika Taanila. It is suggested that Ahtila and Taanila are representatives of a new post-cinematic citizenship in a contemporary European culture of the moving image.</jats:p>
