<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>McGann has characterized Possum as being about the relationship between the outsider and society that is central to his work. This article places that relationship in the national context of New Zealand as a project of settlement, and in the filmic context of the 1990s New Zealand Gothic.</jats:p>
