This paper retraces the genesis and evolution of Canada’s French public broadcaster’s foray into online news (OLN). It examines how Radio-Canada’s online news service has been integrated with radio and television newsrooms, how it contributes to expanding the public sphere, and the manner in which it differentiates itself from the competition. The paper concludes by reviewing the challenges facing the public broadcaster in an era where pressures for civic-minded journalism are engendering a set of participatory practices.
