A theoretical and analytical approach is taken in this study to assess the three (f)actors responsible for information transfer via TV : the communicator, the TV message and the audience. The researcher is then incorporated as a fourth actor in the communication process with regard to improving the « quality » of both TV message production and reception. The article examines the role played by the four factors identified with respect to the « quality » of information transfer. Conducting reception analysis or, in other words, assessing viewer reactions to a given TV message is part of an increasingly complex communication process within which the researcher should be considered as a contributor to the quality of the TV message. His or her task is (1) to find out what viewers think of the programme through a thorough and objective analysis, and (2) to transmit this information clearly and efficiently to the communicator so that (3) programmes better suited to the audience can be produced without compromising the communicator's creativity and quality standards.
