A contemporary man who moves with the times should cultivate the national tradition, but, at the same time, she or he should maintain an individual character. Since the end of the 80ties when Europeanism reached Finland, melancholic and reserved Finns have had to cope with multiculturalism and the imperative to be open to otherness. Beginning with the analysis of how to communicate the wish to get off the bus (the shift from, so far sufficient, body language signal to a verbal form of communication), the author tries to unravel how deep transformations are involved in that change, the change which is seemingly minor, yet so important and difficult for the Finnish people.
