The article is an attempt to study the feasibility of Polish culture in relation to plebian-phobia [Pol. chamofobia]. The term is defined here (by extending the initial definition of Henryk Domański) as an essential element in the traditions of the gentry and the intelligentsia, as a way, both in the past and today, to legitimize the supremacy of the privileged classes, and (what follows) a tool for inoculating society, which is largely plebian, from its dislike and contempt for its identity. In analyzing these issues, Michel Foucault’s concept of power-knowledge and Antonio Gramsci’s concept of ideology are used, among others.
